Boy, in researching the topic of Beer Serving Etiquette, I never realized that there were so many rules to observe. But, no matter how many rules there are around the world, what the beginner needs to remember about beer serving etiquette is very simple.
Serve beer in your home the way you would want it served to you. Or, speak to each of your guests and ask how they would like their beer served. Mainly this means bottle, can or glass. I would be willing to bet that most times your guests will drink it the same way you do. Which makes things easy.
There are probably a few things to remember, though.
Beer is best served cold. At least this is true in most cases.
Stouts should probably be served at room temp, or a little warm if it can be easily arranged. But, you should ask your guests. They may not know this and may prefer their stout to be cold. Don't laugh at them, though. That would definitely not be good etiquette.
But, overall, the beginner should have no problems if they just remember to serve beer to their guests in the same way they themselves are drinking it. Don't forget the other side of the etiquette question. Most guests are not going to deliberately make a nuisance of themselves if they don't like the way you served your beer.
These tips, however, are for the beginner. If you plan to make a serious career out of serving beer, then I suggest you do more research. As I said, there are many difference in beer serving etiquette depending on where you go in the world. As a beginner, if you're expecting guests from out of the country, make sure you ask them how they prefer their beer served. That way you won't make any unforgivable blunders.
Oh, one more thing....should you make an obvious mistake while serving beer to guests, and this mistake is commented on, just make sure you reply..."Hey, what do expect? I'm a beginner when it comes to beer serving etiquette!" Then, quickly take a drink of your own beer and move on to the next guest. Most times, this will get you out of the situation quickly and painlessly.
