This piece of advice is not for individuals who don't like to get their hands dirty or don't know the difference between a box wrench and a socket...if you fit that category than finding a good brake mechanic (or any good mechanic for that matter) may take a bit of trial and error. My advice is to start with friends who already have taken their cars in to have the brakes done.
But if you don't mind getting grease under your nails and have a bit of mechanical aptitude, the best brake mechanic may well be you.
Even if the mechanic you choose is appropriately skilled he may not have your best interest in mind. After all he is in the business to make a buck and there maybe a dozen other brake jobs in line after yours. He also may not notice that frayed parking brake cable or that leaking brake caliper.
Yourself, on the other hand, have nothing more important than to make sure your braking system is checked properly and everything that needs to be replaced (or even close to being needed to be replaced) will be replaced.
Although, most cars are basically the same, there are slight differences from car-to-car. If you can take the time to learn how to do a proper brake job (including checking the rotors) you'll find that on most vehicles the process isn't very difficult...and you can make sure that the job is done right.
