I agree that banning peanut butter in our schools is a topic to be seriously considered. My daughter has multiple allergies, i.e. soy, carrots, cucumbers, tree nuts, peanuts, etc. However, peanuts are the real problem. Peanut butter is sticky and leaves an oily residue on surfaces, such as doorknobs and tabletops. Children with food allergies need to learn to live in a world with peanuts. However, young elementary school children are not allowed to carry their own epi-pens and some schools do not have full time nurses. How can we expect children to learn to take care of themselves when we throw them to the wolves with no means to take care of themselves. Touching a surface contaminated with peanut butter residue can cause "severe" reactions, not just a few hives. My daughter is a prime example of this. She has had "severe" reactions to touching a surface that had peanut butter residue on it. This has only happened twice, but twice in an ambulance is enough. I think parents should look at this as a learning experience. What a great way to teach our children empathy for others. A child would feel horrible if something they brought into school made their friend sick and I think that is the real issue. I do not want schools to ban everything my child is allergic to, just peanut butter and only on the elementary school level. Parents need to think about the fact allergies can show up at any time and it may be their child tomorrow.
