The number 666 was given as a code to indicate the first beast without naming it. The reason was because the first beast existed at the time of the writing (or editing) of the book of Revelation. The first beast was feared across the whole Western world at that time.

By adding the first six Roman numerals together, the code is broken.

D + C + L + X + V + I = 666

The Roman Empire represented more than rule by Rome. The Roman Empire had a mission to urbanize (Romanize) the world. The Image of first beast was urbanization itself. Hence the opposite extremes found in John the Baptist and Jesus, both of whom spent time in the wilderness and renounced materialism.

The second beast can be identified by 666. The second beast spreads its Image, forcing it onto nations that would otherwise revert to pre-urban tribal conditions.
