Testimonies: Turning points in life

LIVING IN FARGO-MOORHEAD:
A BRIGHT FUTURE

Fargo-Moorhead-a growing community comprised of more than 170 thousand people. The community features many qualities which attract potential residents: beautiful city parks with playgrounds, a scenic river, winding whimsically through the valley, plenty of accommodations to make life more enjoyable and cultural venues, including two art museums and a variety of unique businesses.

For some the F-M area-Fargo and West Fargo, N.D. and Moorhead and Dilworth Minn.-is the perfect place to raise a family. A young couple, standing before the recently rebuilt playground in Lamb Park in Moorhead, could surely envision their future children climbing happily on the radiant red and bright blue playground equipment. The same young couple may wish to remain in the area to experience the small-town feel Fargo-Moorhead offers. Here, people still smile and wave or even say "hello" as you pass them on the street and servers at local restaurants often extend friendly greetings and happily make small talk about current events and the weather.
Some F-M natives appreciate the area enough to settle down and raise families here after completing high school or college. Other permanent residents come to the area from other places hoping Fargo-Moorhead has more to offer than where they originally lived. And some, who have lived here for most of their lives or who move here temporarily, stay for a while but ultimately leave in search of something new-hoping to find something bigger not only physically, but also symbolically.
"Home is where the heart is," said Paul Kvamme of Fargo. "But that doesn't make it any moreinteresting." Kvamme, a 23-year-old art student, told the story of his migration while sitting on a bench on his college campus, carefully painting a water-color still life of a near by construction equipment. He believes that everyone is looking for something other than what they already have; this desire to experience something new could be the force that drives young adults to leave the places where they were born and raised to find new homes. Kvamme said that the idea of "getting a fresh start" in a new place isn't just something that applies to young people in the F-M area; this is a universal concept. Some young people leave a smaller town to come to the F-M area, hoping to get a taste of bigger
