You want to become computer-savvy, fast...take a class
For a new computer user to become proficient in the shortest amount of time, their one and only option is to take a beginner's computer instructor-led, face-to-face class.
New users should avoid asking family and friends to help them learn. They should stay away from taking an on-line beginner's course. And, they should store away any user's guides, off-the-shelve books or CD-based tutorials until after they have taken a class. Such learning tools only make new users more confused and then they become frustrated and start believing that they can not learn how to use a computer and when they do end up taking a class as a last resort, they have no confidence left, only fear.
Being a computer and technology teacher for over 20 years, take advice from someone who really and truly knows the best and fastest way to learn technology. New users need that face-to-face instruction from someone they have never met and in a formal classroom setting for a number of reasons.
First, they will be in a group of people who feel the same way about learning something seemingly so complicated as computers. Second, they will be asking questions of someone who is objective about the person's ability to learn, be it fast or slow. And, last but not least, is that the new user will be in a formal setting where they will feel some pressure to take the learning seriously and as such will give learning a little more effort.
The one drawback is that they may end up with a teacher that may not be as tolerant as other teachers with new users. If a new user does end up with such a teacher, they should ask for a refund and find another class to enroll. They should not give up on taking a class.
Take heart, taking a beginner's computer class will end up being the most effective way to learn and will put you on the fast track to becoming a proficient computer user.
