Your teeth are the essence of your smile and keeping them healthy is important. During development of the teeth which is mostly before birth and up till the age of 10 calcium is important and should be in the diet of the mother and child in the form of milk and milk products. After teeth have formed and erupted calcium in the diet plays a very little role.
Fluoride in the form of drops or tablets if living in an area of low fluoride in the water is helpful to make teeth stronger and resist decay . Again this is important during their formation .After formation of the teeth a systemic source of fluoride has little value and a topical form of fluoride in the form of toothpaste or rinses is helpful to fight decay.
Eating fruits and vegetables has a cleansing effect on the mouth and the fiber present can help reduce plaque in the mouth.
The most important thing to reduce is the frequency if sugar intake. Avoid sticky sweets like toffees which tend to encourage decay. Limit sugar intake to meal times. Avoid carbonated drinks or citrus fruits in excess as these can erode enamel away.
Routine dental visits can help monitor these conditions and asking the dentist for advice on nutrition can help keep the teeth healthy.
