theater district. Nearby are Times Square, Central Park and Rockefeller Center. Though a bit long in the tooth, the Edison's Art Deco facade reminds visitors of its heyday when the Barrymores, George M. Cohan, Ethel Merman and other stage stars lived there.
8. Chelsea Hotel, 222 W. 23rd St., $150, is trying to live down its infamous reputation as the 60s hangout for such misbehaving rock stars as Sid Vicous and the groupies. Gentrified and elegant now, it still attracts New York's famous and infamous music and other kinds of artists. Your high schoolers will love the hip atmosphere in this quaint place. One of my kids lived nearby during five post-university starvation years, and still talks about all the strange friends made in this dinky, but big-hearted hotel.
9. New Yorker Hotel, 481 8th Ave., $145, is a modest little old hotel near the famed garment district, department stores, Pennsylvania Station, Madison Square Garden and the Javits Center. I had to list the New Yorker because I stayed here frequently when I was in town on business or conventions. I won't confess how many years ago it was when I made my first visit, but then I paid $19 a night for a room.
10. Holiday Inn Midtown, 440 W. 57th St., $139. Hey, it just isn't right to name any city's hotels without mentioning a Holiday Inn. They are tacky, cookie-cutter, but always adequate or better for families. It is within a short walk to Lincoln Center, Central Park and the theater district. This one is kid-friendly because it has a nice rooftop swimming pool, one of the few in Manhattan.
