come into today's needs with cable TV and internet access. Incidentally, all of the other hotels I've listed have those facilities, too.
2. Bridgestreet Wilshire Plaza, 134 W. 58th St., $119, features some of the largest hotel rooms in NYC, so many families can fit comfortably in a single or suite without the expense of renting another. Many great restaurants are within easy walking distance, and in addition to scores of ethnic choices, meals can be purchased for from $5 to $500.
3. The Pod Hotel, formerly Pickwick Arms, 230 E. 51st St., $149, is near Rockefeller Center, and the United Nations and St. Patrick's Cathedral. Times Square and Central Park are one mile away. The Statue of Liberty is ten minutes away, but you'd have to take a cab, book a boat or join a tour to see it right. Don't ask me why they call it The Pod, unless they grow those look-alike alien clones there that will eventually take over for all humans.
4. The Roger Smith, 501 Lex. Ave., $190, is small, with only 130 guest rooms, and calls itself a bed and breakfast hotel. So consider that part of the price. It's in the middle of the most posh hotel area, across the street from the grossly-overpriced Intercontinental and the Waldorf Astoria. Also, if you have money to spare, it is close to some expensive Fifth Avenue shops, expensive restaurants, museums and the theater district.
5. Red Roof Inn, 6 W. 32nd St., $150, is a short walk to the Empire State Building and big department stores. It also offers a free breakfast. As with all Red Roofs throughout the US, it is very basic motel quality, but clean and convenient. Their recent ads say they're upgrading the hotel, and if your stay is not completely satisfactory, you don't have to pay. Sure, if you believe that, there's a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell you.
6. The Renaissance, 100 John St., $149, claims to be one of Lower Manhattan's most luxurious and upscale hotels. It was once an office building, so the layouts are rather big and un-hotelish, with lots of floor space, tall windows and high ceilings. If your kids are teens, they'll love the Greenwich Village and artsy atmosphere in and around the hotel. It is near some great museums, such as The Guggenheim, The New Museum of Contempoary Art and the Museum of African Art. For Dad the businessman, a stroll down nearby Wall Street could possibly bring some inspiration for future investment success. Or not.
7. The historic, old Edison Hotel, 228 W. 47th St., $149, is in the middle of the Broadway
