Online classes offer flexibility for people who may be trying to balance work, family, and other commitments. However, online classes may not be suitable for everyone. Below are a few tips that will help you discover whether or not online classes are right for you. In addition, the tips will help you succeed in taking online classes.
1. Pace Yourself - Many people who decide to take online classes already have other commitments. There are a lot of reading, writing, and attendance/participation required for each class. Taking one class at a time until you learn the structure and time commitment needed is highly recommended.
2. Even though you do not physically see the instructor and other students, don't be afraid to ask questions. People will respond. If you need clarification or don't understand a concept, others may be able to explain it differently to help you understand.
3. Set aside some uninterrupted time each day to focus on school. I received my Masters degree from University of Phoenix online. Like most adults, I work, have a family, and have other commitments to attend to. When I was going through the program, I knew it was going to take two years to complete it. I scheduled time each day to focus solely on school. This allowed me to keep up with the reading and assignments. Also, others around me knew when it was time for me to focus on school.
4. Read the syllabus - All instructors post their syllabus on the first day of class. The syllabus clearly outlines the instructors expectations, assignments, and grading. In addition, it has their contact information which may be needed throughout the class.
5. Most importantly, listen to your body. It is very easy to get burned out from school. You can take a break between each class or extended breaks during busy times for you. While attending University of Phoenix, I chose to take a week break in between each class. This gave me a chance to de-stress and focus on me before continuing the next course. I also took the month of December off for the holidays. This is naturally a busy time of year so it was nice not having to think about school.
Making the decision to take online classes is a big decision. Doing the proper research on the school, curriculum, and expectations will help in the decision making process. Understanding your own learning style and self motivation will help your online class experience be a successful one.
