A prominent question among politicians and the media today is whether the U.S. should pull its troops out of Iraq even if the Iraqi government cannot defend itself. We must consider the reasons why we went in, in the first place. The American public, as well as the Congress and the Senate were told that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. It was explained to us that within a few short years Iraq will have developed nuclear weapons and that it was in the best interest of the United States and its allies for the U.S. to invade Iraq and rid the world of Saddam Hussein. But that was not the only reason, because that was not enough to get the people behind a pre-emptive war. This was however, enough to get the politicians behind the White House. The next step was to get the American public to back an invasion. Thus, started a huge media campaign where we were told that Iraq was supporting the terrorist that were behind the attacks of 911. They went even further saying that we must attack Iraq and get Saddam out of power because he was a dictator brutalizing his own people. To sum it up these are the reasons we went into Iraq.
1. Find weapons of mass destruction.
2. Remove Saddam Hussein from power.
3. Establish an Iraqi government which is self sustainable.
On the first point the mission was accomplished, we found no weapons of mass destruction. Just as the U.N. weapons inspectors had claimed. This includes an American investigator whose name is Scott Ritter. On the second issue the mission was accomplished and Saddam Hussein was tried and sentenced to death by hanging and that sentence was carried out. His sons died during the attacks, "Shock and Awe" attacks. It is now three and a half years later and the Iraqi government is still not up to the task of running its own government. This is according to news reports on MSNBC, Fox News, and CNN. I must add this as a side note. I can see similarities of the reports coming out of the government as I did with Iraq. President Ahmadinejad is a brutal dictator. He is also working on weapons of mass destruction. He is also working with the terrorists to attack America and its allies. Look for a war with Iraq in our very near future. Before that happens watch out for terror attacks here at home. I believe this will be the only way in which, the American people might be frightened enough to go along with the White House in an invasion of Iraq. The same points are being reported, but look for the reports to reach a fevered pitch.
The American forces have done what they can in Iraq and now they die on a daily basis trying to police a country that is still engaging in factional fighting. It is time to bring our guys home and let the Iraqi's govern themselves and hope that they can put together a government that is unified in the ideas of peace.
