Many kids love riding on a bus. Some kids get bored of sitting in the car all the time and they actually like it when there is a change. And a bus is something bigger where they have a good view. But change can be scary too.. They may be OK with riding on a bus with you, but may not prefer that when you are not around especially with a bunch if kids they don't know.
There are a few things that you can do to make their school bus ride interesting.
1. First of all get the child excited about going to school, with new backpack, new shoes etc.
2. Take them on a bus ride before hand to show how a school bus would be. They may start liking it.
3. It's a good idea to drop them at the bus stop atleast the first few days. If they are small, then you would want to do it everyday.
4. Get to know the driver. You knowing them & they knowing you & your children can be helpful.
5. Make them feel like they are big kids now and they get to go in the bus by themselves.
6. Say exciting things about going on a bus, like you can make a lot of friends, get to know so many people, sit with your friends & chat or may be even sit & read a book (if they love reading).
7. A school bus is a very good place to socialize and children who are very social may love that environment.
8. Parents should also talk to children and make them understand that the bus is supposed to be place where they can feel safe and if they come across anything they don't like or are scared of, they can always talk to the teacher, parent or driver.
9. If there other kids in the same neighborhood, have them get together before the first day of school, so they know each other which makes them feel safe in the bus.
10. Let's not talk only about good things, of course we all know that bullying is very common in school buses. We also have to prepare our children for that. Even if your child doesn't want to get involved in such things, they can always get into trouble by some bad kids. Especially when your child is among the younger group, it may not be easy for them. Talk to them about bullying so that they are prepared to face something like that and it doesn't come as a surprise to them. Boost up their self confidence! Tell them that there bullies everywhere and we have to learn to deal with them.
11. Talk to children about how they have to behave when in the bus. Also tell them to remain seated until the bus stops.
12. Let the children know that you are always there for them.
Hope our children are always safe & sound.
