If you look at the roots of NASCAR and the core fan base, you will see that NASCAR is a sport that resonates with people who feel they can relate to the drivers. Until just a few years ago, the majority of the drivers were guys that came from humble beginnings and worked their way through the ranks. Some drivers even held a regular job while trying to break into the 'big leagues'.
The blue collar feel of auto racing is different than any other mainstream sport in the United States. This isn't a sport that requires you to have been born with a natural athletic gift. This is sport where even the top names of all time got their start by buying a car (often from a junkyard) and with the help of some buddies, built a fast car that they take to the track on Friday or Saturday and test against guys just like them.
It is this humble beginning that allows even the richest race car driver to relate so closely to the local dirt tracker in any small town. The fact is Jeff Gordon and your local dirt track hero may only be separated by a couple of well-timed opportunities. After all, what other sport is there where the star competitors get on camera after every event and speak in a deep southern draw about how the car felt and what "the boys back at the shop" would be doing the following week.
WHAT A GREAT SPORT!
