Is 40 really the new 30? Absolutely. As a 36-year-old graduate student with a two-year-old toddler, I feel like I am just hitting my stride. Modern women are no longer forced into the old economic patterns of marrying young. Independent and educated we have the opportunity to build our own careers and establish our own identities before committing to a relationship.
Modern woman are learning the value of eating smart and exercising regularly. We look and feel younger longer. We take advantage of medical advances that help prevent illness and disease. Knowing that we have the opportunity to live longer, healthier lives, many women wait well into their 30s before having children.
In the mystical tradition of the Kabala, it is said that true wisdom is not attained until 40, making the new 40, not only physically fit, but capable of great reflection. With this combination of vitality and experience, it's the independent women of the baby boom generation who paved the way for this new trend. Their vast numbers gave them political and financial clout, and their concerns became America's concernsfrom environmentalism to face creams.
At 30, most of these modern women were too busy to be concerned with turning 30. It wasn't until a decade later that they realized "oh my god, I'm 40." But, as I near 40, I look around and think, "ay . . . forty isn't really that bad."
