Easy ways your family can "go green"

7 Simple Ways for Busy Families to Go Green

Going green is more than just embracing environmentally responsible behavior; it's creating balance both globally and personally.

Going green may feel like another set of responsibilities that you just don't have time for, but becoming environmentally savvy doesn't have to be a burden. Here are seven simple steps to help your busy family become environmentally friendly and improve your quality of life.

Go Low Flow

Buying a low flow shower head and faucet aerators can reduce water and energy consumption by almost 50% and are generally inexpensive and easy to install. That's not only environmentally friendly, but will reduce your utility expenses.

Bulk Up

Start buying in bulk. You'll cut down on unnecessary packaging, while paying less per unit.

Choose to Reuse

Bring your own canvas bags to the grocery store. Remember, "Paper or plastic?" is a trick question.

Park It!

Turning that 5 minute car ride into a 15 minute bike ride is not only environmentally friendly; it can be an enjoyable outing for the whole family (and think of the money you'll save at the gas pumps).

Up Grade Responsibly

Electronics evolve quickly. Don't throw those old electronics out when you upgrade. Many manufacturers now sponsor recycle programs or offer a reimbursement for that old equipment.

Curb Appeal

Check with your local waste management department. Many cities have curbside recycling and will provide the recycling bins.

Stop the Electronic Hum

Even the busy family needs a little down time. Try reading a book or playing a board game Instead of turning on the TV. The average television uses 100 watts of power per hour. If your family watches 4 hours of TV a day, that's 145,600 watts a year.

Going green doesn't have to be a sacrifice. It can begin with very simple changes in behavior. Going green is about living together in harmony and what better place to start than in your own home, with your own family.
