Thanksgiving is a time to get together with loved ones, to reflect on life's blessings, and to eat from the bounty you've been given. Nobody says that has to be turkey and dressing! Each person is unique and so is their bounty. The pilgrims taught us to take risks, to go with what we believe in, and to thumb our nose at establishment, when necessary. I say break out, and eat what you like.
In Texas, a couple of years ago, some relatives chose to have a fish fry for Thanksgiving. Their bounty came from the river and was caught just days before. The meal included catfish, hush puppies, cole slaw, and pumpkin pie. They forgot about the turkey, and clean up was a breeze!
Another family I know has fried chicken, 'cause they just ain't turkey people. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, rolls, iced tea, and of course an assortment of pies and cakes. Sounds good to me!
If you have an Italian bent, you might go with spaghetti and meatballs. I can easily picture the entire family, talking loudly, laughing, and drinking wine as the mama stirs the ingredients for the perfect sauce. I am not Italian, and I do not know what constitutes a traditional meal, so I vote for tossed salad and plenty of garlic bread. I can't claim creativity here, but it sure sounds fun. Keep the wine flowing, and bring on the pastries at the end of the feast.
I could go on and on, but I won't. No one can dictate the perfect menu for your Thanksgiving meal. Dare to dream, have a little fun, and indulge yourself. Most of all, enjoy the people you are with. Chances are the day will be more fun for it and will stand out when compared to the "cookie-cutter" days of Thanksgiving past!
Bon appetit!
By the way, I'm a traditionalist. :)
