What do people want from work?

One of the first things people consider when taking a job is the money they are going to make. When you are an employee with a family there are many things that you look for in a job. After all your family is important too.

Flex schedules- This is a trend that works for the employee but still benefits the employer. The employee is given a set number of tasks and a deadline to complete them. They can work any hour combinations they would like. This way if they have to take the kids to school they can do that without being late to work. If the kids have a 1/2 day of school or no school at all, the employee can take care of them without missing work. If the employee and the employer work together this can be a winning situation for everyone. In some cases the employee is actually more productive at work because they aren't worried about what is going on at home.

Day Care- Providing day care on site is also a huge bonus for the employee and employer. This limits the days missed because the babysitter didn't show up. Anyone who has an employee with children will tell you this can be a problem. Also, the employer can provide assistance in paying for child care. Most people cannot afford to pay for day care. Many people don't have family members that can provide care at no cost. Taking the financial burden off or reducing it can lead to high productivity. The employee knows that the company cares about the welfare of their family and this in turn makes them work harder.

Employee input- Having a staff meeting and talking at your employees is not nearly as effective as involving them in decisions. When an employee feels like they have made a decision that could benefit the company they tend to have more loyalty, again leading to workplace productivity.

Out of work activities- Nothing rewards an employee like a company picnic or some other relaxed setting. This helps them bond with other employees and provides time just to express themselves. When employees bond with their peers they have a tendency to help each other more on a job. It creates a team attitude. Teamwork helps to make the tasks of any job run smoother. Again, a winning situation for the employees and the employer.

Employees want to feel like they are being treated fairly. No one likes to be treated like a number. They have feelings, they have lives. They are not machines and definitely revolt if they are treated as such. They want to be respected. They also want their families to be important. They want to participate in decision making and they want to feel like they are a part of something. Do you know anyone who gives 110 percent of their life to a job because they get nothing in return? It all comes down to treating people like people. That is what people ultimately want from work.
