The health care and legal systems are about as good to Americans as a broken seatbelt.
Local police departments ought not have any sovereignty when it comes to how, when, why or where a driver wears his or her seatbelt. While a so-called death wish is in order for the careless, seatbeltless driver, the wish is his or her own.
But the problem lies inside of your pocketbook. If a driver is injured in a car accident, is at fault and is without insurance, then you have to pay for him or her to get well. The responsibility is yours collectively, because of your status as taxpayer.
The issue is a double edged sword. If a driver is free to drive without a seatbelt and becomes injured, somehow he becomes responsible for you to facilitate care. But if the driver is not free to drive without a seatbelt, the police department then fills the role of parent and disciplinarian. Afterall, is little Johnny really hurting anyone but himself by not wearing his seatbelt?
The best solution, the only solution really, is freedom for all. Let Johnny endager his life if he chooses, and let you have your wallet back. The sooner we fix the health care and legal systems, the sooner those seatbelts start working for us. All we can do is pray the driver's death wish changes.
