Engagement tips for the smart bride and groom

Working in the bridal industry for the past few years, I see brides daily and often wonder how in the world they will pull off this big day being so scattered. Throwing a party this important takes planning, organization and tact. Not until I recently got engaged did I find out that upon receiving "the ring", you also receive a shot of dumb juice, making it close to impossible to focus and get anything done. Your mind runs around in circles with all the ideas you may have about the big day, but it's so hard to actually organize and commit to those ideas. Whether you have six months or a year and a half until the wedding day, you need a plan. Here are three smart steps for any couple to take right off the bat (or as soon as you're adjusted to the idea of being engaged):

1. Tell friends and family about your engagement! It seems like a given, but once you're engaged, you realize just how many people that is to tell. There are extended family, coworkers, and friends you only speak to once a month, but it's easier to pick up the phone now than it will be later when you have to say "Actually, we got engaged four months ago". Your friends and family will also be helpful in giving you fresh ideas and perspective as you start planning. Bounce ideas off of already-married friends or speak to grandparents about ways they made their own wedding day special.

2. Visit Brides.com and register for an account. Then start using their detailed planning checklist and perusing photos in the galleries to get an idea of the style of wedding you want. Websites like Brides.com and TheKnot.com have so much valuable information and can answer many questions you'll have from planning the wedding to honeymoon hotspots.

3. Set a budget! So many brides start planning without having a clue as to what they can or cannot spend. Sit down with your fiance, parents, and anyone else who may be contributing financially, and set a number that you want to try to stay under. Weddings are often more expensive than you think, so give yourself a little wiggle room, if possible. This budget will be used as you think about the things that are most important to you both for the wedding. You'll need it when you start meeting with coordinators, visiting venues, and shopping for your gown.

Remember, everyone gets a little stressed over planning their wedding, but be sure to keep it fun! If you stay organized, you'll be better equipped to make all the decisions you will soon have to make.
