Hello - I have lived from solely selling my original watercolour paintings for the past twenty years.
The majority of sales I have made over that period have been from setting up my screens in Shopping Malls. Not all malls will allow this, but many do and though price can often be a bit scary (it increases according to the popularity and footfall of the particular mall), I have never found a better way of selling paintings.
The point is that people are in buying-mode in a mall (rather than eating mode in a restaurant) and are often interested to see something different in a mall rather than the usual chain-stores. However, an important point is the standard and subject matter of your work. People can recognise a professional standard, as they can an amateur one.
Also, I have always found that landscape as a subject matter is what the widest number of people can understand and identify with. 99% of my sales have been from landscape (and the more atmospheric and emotive the better.)
I have also sold many paintings in the Ideal Home Exhibition in London (I exhibited there for seven consecutive years) but the old faithful is Shopping Malls.
Please check that you are keeping up with the fashions - particularly with regard to framing. There are a lot of cutting edge and house-proud people out there. Also ensure that your mounts (matts) are well cut and that you present a professional appearance.
The rest is up to you - your approach and friendliness with the many people you will speak to. Good luck. My web-site is www.landscape-painting.co.uk
