Crafts For Young Children
Here is a look at 5 basic criteria to be used in judging which crafts are best for young children:
1. Interests - Look at your young children's interests and discover what they like to do. Every child will have a slightly differing viewpoint on events that are going on around them, how things are put together, and so on and so forth. Come up with some simple questions to ask them regarding what they like to do. This may come as a surprise to some, but children have minds too... they are loving, caring, dramatic, sharing, and imaginitive. Let them be that way.
2. Skill Level - Gage the skill levels of the children that are to be doing these crafts. You would not give a knife to a very young child; and in the same sense, you would probably not bother with safety scissors with a pre-teen. Age matters. Beyond age lies the emotional level and mental level of the child as well. Determine these different levels and you can narrow your search for the perfect crafts to do.
3. Craft Complexity - Further to Skill Level is the dilemma of Craft Complexity. A handy tip to remember is this: If you can't do it easily, then the youngsters are going to have an even harder time; and this could make them uneasy about the craft and not enjoy themselves. Choose crafts that do not take more than 10 steps, otherwise you are putting too much pressure on the children to remember stages and to do things right.
4. Materials - The amount of materials you have on-hand will often decide between certain crafts. If you are at a loss as to decide what craft you would like your young children doing, analyze the list of materials needed for the craft. If the materials in the list exceed your on-hand materials, consider an alternative. Narrow the list to the crafts that you have the most material on-hand. This way you will also avoid purchasing unnecessary materials.
5. Cost - If, by chance, you do find that you are at a loss for the materials that are needed, window shop at several stores. Compare prices and buy enough to make many projects and have left-over materials for later crafting projects. Do not spend money on materials that are not needed for the specific craft project at hand, though, otherwise you are just wasting money. Even if you plan on using the materials later, you may end up not getting to that later craft project.
By following these 5 handy tips to choosing crafts for young children, you will become closer to your children, you will understand your children better, and you will have a good time with your children. Be safe, have fun, and never stop learning.
