It should be remembered that divorce is difficult for every member of the family, not just the parents. Teenagers, in particular, take it very hard. There are so many other things going on in their lives that they have to deal with. Many will be going through puberty and having to deal with all the changes in their body. They have to deal with school work and home work, and exams as well as having to listen to their parents rowing between themselves, and even taking their anger out on them. No one in the family is happy, there's a possibility that one of his/her parents will be leaving and this is a very hard thing for young people to have to cope with.
Although talking to your teenager is generally the best way to explain things, during the divorce of their parents they feel confused and isolated and may not want to listen to anything their parents say. This is where books can be a great help. I list below some books for teens going through this traumatic time, beginning with some I would recommend.
THE DIVORCE HELPBOOK FOR TEENS
by Cynthia MacGregor.
This is an excellent book for teenagers whose parents are either going through a divorce or who are already divorced. Cynthis MacGregor approaches the subject from the teenagers point of view, but also gives an insight into how their parents may be feeling and the problems they are facing.
The teenagers are gently helped through every difficult situation that can arise during a divorce. They're shown how to handle each event and also it's explained to them that nothing that is happening with their parents is their fault. They can become the victims of their parents unhappiness and are shown how to deal with this.
This is an excellent book and I would highly recommend it.
DIVORCE IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD: ZOE AND EVAN'S COPING GUIDE FOR KIDS.
by Zoe Stern, Evan Stern and Ellen Sue Stern.
This book is written by two teenagers and their mother. It is aimed at young teenagers and gives lots of helpful advice to cope with all the problems teenagers face when their parents are divorced. Recommended.
NOW WHAT DO I DO? A GUIDE TO HELP TEENAGERS WITH THEIR PARENTS' SEPARATION AND DIVORCE
by Lynn Cassella-Kapusinski
Another excellent book with lots of useful exercises to help the young teen to understand their feelings over their parents divorce. Recommended.
OTHER BOOKS AIMED AT TEENAGERS OF DIVORCED PARENTS:
1. My Parents Are Getting Divorced: How to Keep it Together when your Mom and Dad are Splitting Up
by Florence Cadier & Melissa Daly.
2. Surviving Divorce: Teens Talk About What Hurts And What Helps
by Trudi Strain Trueit.
3. Why Me? A Teen Guide To Divorce and Your Feelings
by Rachel Aydt.
4. No Easy Answers: A Teen Guide to Why Divorce Happens
by Florence Calhoun
5. For Better, For Worse: A Guide To Surviving Divorce for Preteens and their Families.
by Janet Bode, Stan Mack, Ronnie Kaufman.
Although this book is aimed at nine to twelve-year-olds I think it is equally suitable for young teens.
