Guide to German beers

German beer has internationally been reduced to the Oktoberfest and a couple of German beer names that are sold internationally. It is also world wide knowledge that Germans are not only doing perfectly well in brewing the drink made of hops and malt, but also in drinking it in large amounts.
Little do we know about the every day usage of beer by the average Joe in Germany. They don't drink the Oktoberfest beer and they don't usually go to big festivals every weekend. If you would like to enjoy German beer as intended in the actual country of origin, you will meet with a couple of friends and drink some beer in 500ml glasses like every other civilized person and usually leave before you get too drunk. Of course you drink the beer from the local brewery as they have just as much of a variety to offer as the big names.
I don't think you can give actual guidelines there is so many different little breweries. Everybody will have to make their own mind up. The only advice I can give is: Go to Germany, stay away from the big names and try the different kinds in different locations for yourself. I bet that this is going to be the time of your life!
