politely and inconspicuously nudge or pop that stack of balls in front of you. You DO wan't to hit it with authority. But you don't want to "Bubba" the shot so hard that you just might send the cue ball flying two tables down into some very annoyed player's beer! A good break shot (or any shot!) is about control first and foremost. Then, break with as much speed and power as you can deliver...WITH CONTROL! You'll gain the confidence you need to apply said speed and power only through practice and repetition.
Then, you can approach your break shot, and your whole game, with the confidence and concentration that comes from really understanding what you're doing. Yes, there is an element of chance and an unpredictable nature to the break shot. But, this first, defining shot is NOT rolling the dice! YOU are still the one in charge. You are in *control*! Don't treat it like you are not capable of doing it well and consistently. In fact, it is THE one and only shot of the game that you are certain to have seen before, exactly as it is in front of you. Figure out how to use that to predict what'll happen with the break, and you have certainly heightened your game.
THAT'S power. That's *control*. And who knows - if the moon is right and you're feeling good and you've got some good karma going for ya, you may even pocket the 9 ball on the break and win. Just make sure you give me my cut!
