B2, B6 & Folic Acid all help in the breakdown of homocysteine in the body. High levels of homocysteine have been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Folate also helps to maintain a healthy circulatory system and it has been suggested that an increased intake of folic acid, especially by men, would lower their risk of cardiovascular disease. Statistics show that men are four times more likely than women to have cardiovascular disease. Researchers at the Eramus Medical Center, Rotterdam, Holland also found that high levels of homocysteine could cause osteoporotic fractures in people over the age of 55. The study that appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine (May 2004) showed that high levels of homocysteine quadrupled the risk of hip fractures in men the figures were not as high in women.
Vitamin B2 is essential in men and women alike as its role is that of a traffic cop for other B vitamins, directing them to find pathways within the body in order to do their respective jobs. B2 also has antioxidant duties this means it helps to prevent oxygen-based damage by recycling a small molecule called Glutathoine.
Vitamins B3, B5, B12 & biotin are also essential in the production, metabolism, transportation and synthesis of fat in the body. B3 especially, has a cholesterol lowering effect.
Vitamin B3 has also been shown to be involved in insulin metabolism and blood sugar regulation and will help in the prevention or in a maintenance program for diabetes. Men have higher death rates from diabetes then women do.
The vitamins B6, B12 & folate also have a vital role to play in the creation of all new cells in the body especially red blood cells.
Biotin has also been linked with hair loss.
Vitamins A, C & E are all antioxidant vitamins and although they work really well on their own, when taken together they are extremely powerful against oxygen-based damage. Although oxygen is essential to stay alive, it can damage cells inside the body when the oxygen-carrying molecules become unstable.
Vitamin C also helps to aid in iron adsorption and can also help to regenerate vitamin E supplies in the body.
Vitamin A is another of the antioxidant vitamins, both A & E are fat soluble so can be stored in the body. Alongside itss antioxidant role, vitamin A is probably best known for being vital to maintaining vision.
Vitamin A also offers support to the immune system by promoting the growth and inhibiting stress-induced shrinkage of the thymus gland. Vitamin A is
