As a western woman traveling alone I found Japan a much safer place to spend time, while on the other hand I found my experiences in China a little more daunting.
While China has a rich history to experience in your travels ,the worry of hanging on to your belongings for dear life, watching everything you purchase isn't whisked out to the back room and switched for a counterfeit or even worse an empty box, tends to take the shine off the temples and artifacts!(I'm not saying this is always the case but it was in mine).
It's also hard to ignore the whole question of human rights in China. Although you don't hear as much in the news about it these days, The detention and subsequent disappearances of people who speak against the government is still going on.
So I guess you have to search your own conscience about that one.
The thing about Japan that you cant help but be taken back by the respect and politeness these people show to visitors in Japan. The same cannot be said for their experiences in the west.
Japan holds all the wonders of a society who have hung on to their traditions as well as embraced the wonders of the 21st century and beyond.
