The sun was starting to come out after days of rain and in the last days of August, 2007. The weather had been cool, so cool, you needed sweatshirts and pants! The kids had been cooped up in the house for the last few days watching television, movies, and playing video games. They were antsy to get out and bursting of unused energy. I had gone to the gym myself this afternoon to expel my own energy and be around people. Afterward, I stopped at the supermarket to pick up a few things and ran into several people that I haven't seen in awhile. Of course, conversations began and phone numbers exchanged and all the while my cell phone starts ringing...."mom, is Anthony allowed to wear Gianna's sneakers?" "I'm on my way home, Gabrielle, get him to wear something else," and I hung up and sighed! Another fight on the horizon! They were all on each other's nerves and the phone calls were just beginning, or so I thought.
I left the store and took the back way home all the while talking to my girlfriend about her relationship problems and not knowing what I was coming home to. I have become weary of the conflicts. As I pulled onto my street and drove towards home, I saw my four children out on the driveway with Shelly, the sheepdog. Much to my surprise and delight, they were all out there helping Keira with her running skills and playing field hockey. Gabrielle was teaching her how to sprint and Gianna and Anthony were laughing and running around! My heart was warmed even though the evening was chilly on this August evening! My children were all getting along and actually PLAYING with each other. Oh, what joy! They still get along and like each other! They are having FUN!
This same scene will probably not be played out tomorrow evening as the temperatures begin to rise again and this day will be over but the memories of this cool August evening will stay with me forever!
