Computer hackers are not the romanticized version that you see in the movies or from long ago when computers were first invented. In the early days, part of the issue with "hacking" was that there were no laws on the books to prosecute anyone. This meant that "hacking" or breaking into a computer system was actually not illegal. With the advent of more stringent computer laws and actual prosecution of criminals under those laws, computer break-ins have taken a much more sinister turn.
Now hackers no longer do it mostly for bragging rights, but to make money. Typical hackers are extremely computer savvy and have a lot of time on their hands. They target unsuspecting individuals by attacking their home networks or small businesses where people are either unaware of network security or lack the resources to invest in it.
Hackers look for financial information, identity information, or access to other systems like banks and credit card companies. Are they successful? Absolutely, computer "hacking" is at an all time high. There are even indications that large crime syndicates are even becoming involved. There is almost an unlimited field for their criminal activities.
So where is it all going? There are no real answers as to why and with the explosive growth of computers and the Internet, there isn't any end to the challenges that hackers face and us as users to defend our systems. Chaos is the goal of the corrupt but good network security will keep you safe. You have to decide what price to pay for protection and perseverance.
