Most people think of sexism as discrimination against one specific gender. This type of sexism does cause suffering, however, there is another form of sexism that does not get as much attention. Transgendered people are laughed at and made fun of by most other people. Men, women, young, old, gay, straight, black and white people alike victimize those who are transgendered.
It is difficult to put a measurement on the amount a person, or a specific group of people, suffers. More transgendered people are discriminated against in more ways than any other socially defined group, therefore the group of transgendered people have a greater chance of being victims. Transgendered people rarely get the jobs they apply for and at the same rate of pay for the same jobs as their peers. They have a greater chance of being beaten and left for dead because of how they look. They are almost always thought of as being homosexual. They are always laughed at, stared at or pointed at when they are out in public.
Although not completely gone, awareness and education have helped to make huge differences in traditional racial and sexual discrimination. Transgender sexism has a long way to go to catch up.
