The easiest way to stop shanking your wedges is to first check your alignment. Make sure your feet are pointed towards the intended target line, and do so by aligning a club straight at your target where your feet would rest. In many cases, this will feel very different at first, due to the fact that your alignment has most likely been off. Next, align your shoulders to the right if you're right handed, and vice-versa if you're a lefty. You want your shoulders to be slightly closed at address so it forces you to bring the club to the inside first, rather than taking it too far to the outside, forcing a "cut-across" move that results in a shank. A great tip is to swing the club with your shoulders rather than with your arms, this takes the hands out of the swing and makes it more difficult to open or close the face at impact, which, in turn, can cause a shank. After swinging with your shoulders on the correct alignment, make sure that you stay smooth throughout the swing. There's a reason why most Tour professionals hit the ball far and still look like they barely swing, it's called rhythm, or timing. While taking the club to the top, rehearse a smooth transition from address to the top, and then back down and through. Slow down the takeaway, and let the club do the work for you. This is a guarantee to stop shanking your wedges, as well as all of the long irons that are never put in play.
