The break off in both 8 ball and 9 ball pool is a very important shot. Being the first shot it can set up the game either in your favor or it can hand the advantage to your opponent.
The greatest difference in breaking off into the rack in 9 ball pool as opposed to 8 ball pool is that in 9 ball pool the game can be won from the break off. To win the game from the break off in 9 ball pool you must pot the 9 ball. This is known as a golden break.
I would estimate that around 90% of the break off shot is down to luck but you can use your knowledge of the game and your skill to give yourself the other ten percent to work in your favor, trying to turn the random outcome of the break off in your favor.
The best tip in to have a successful break off is to get yourself into a comfortable, steady position and stance. Power in the break off is all important and having a solid stance will enable you to get as much power as possible into the shot. I would also suggest that you cue the cue ball from three or four inches left or right of the center of the break off area. In my experience this slight angle helps to split the rack in a fashion which gives a greater chance of winning the frame in a single shot with a golden break.
