Why black is used as a symbol of mourning

At one time or another everyone has found themselves afraid and in the dark. The intense horror of being alone, out of control, frightened, frozen, unable to see, unable to know where to move, unable to think and react as one would in the light. That is grief. As anyone that has experienced a loss knows the feelings of grief are as real and paralyzing as being swallowed in the dark. So why did our culture choose black to express grief? We are a culture of feelings. It was a simple way to express on the outside what we feel on the inside. It is a way to connect with each other in a common feeling that is painful and terrifying. It is a way to unite with our loved ones and friends to show that we understand when we do not have the words. It is a simple way, no matter your education or economic status to speak a common language of love and respect.
