When to consult a nutritionist

You have a bookshelf full of diet books. You've tried every single one of them, yet even if you spend months following them religiously, you still don't seem to be able to lose more than a few pounds, and the minute you stray from your diet, the weight is right back again.

Some books talk about counting calories, and others are full of jargon about fats, carbohydrates, and proteins and how you should balance them.

Then there's talk about fiber, white bread and whole wheat bread, white rice and brown rice, and hydrogenated fat and non-hydrogenated fat.

It's seems that every book has a different opinion about what's good for you.

To make matters even worse, on your forays into the local health food stores, you see shelves and shelves of vitamins that might or not be just what you need to make you feel better and even lose weight.

Ultimately, all you can do is throw your hands in the air in confusion and frustration.

Now you have reached the point where you need the advice of a nutritionist. Someone with the ability to cut through all the confusing jargon and help you discover what nutrition guidelines you should be following. Guidelines will be unique to your needs and lifestyle.

The problem with most diets is that not all people are created equal, and what works for one person may not work for another.

For instance if you are very active, you may require vitamin supplements to enhance your diet. Vitamins that will increase your energy and endurance levels that are pushed to the maximum by your active lifestyle.

If you are more elderly, you may need to consult a nutritionist who can suggest diets and supplements that can help prevent colds and flus that can become very serious for seniors.

Possibly you are recovering from a sickness or accident that requires a special diet with strict controls as the healing process is taking place.

It's time to consult with a nutritionist when you just need direction when it comes to the diet that is best for you or a member of your family.

Maybe you have a child that suffers from food allergies, and there's an entire food group, like dairy products for instance, that have to be avoided.

A nutritionist can help you compensate for the the lost vitamins, minerals, and calories, by setting up a nutrition program specifically for your child.

When in doubt about diet, supplements, or what role certain foods play in your over-all health, set up an appointment with a nutritionist, and you may be on the road to a better understanding of what's involved in eating heathy and maintaining a vital and happy lifestyle.
