Apple's widely touted iPhone will revolutionize the mobile world as much as Segway attempted to change mobility: that is, not at all.
The reason being that, much like the over-hyped Segway, the iPhone has no features that allow anyone to do what they previously could not do before. The dawn of Segway was to bring the advent of a new mode of transportation until people realized they could already get around without forking up the dough. The iPhone is similar in that it is cool and flashy, but offers no additional functionality that cannot already be achieved with a variety of mobile devices and many high-end cellular phones.
Apple's branding and marketing gives the iPhone it's edge. But many users experience difficulty typing on the touch screen, and professional consumers tend to avoid it in favor of Blackberrys.
That is not to say the iPhone will not be a success. It has already penetrated the marketplace in high numbers and continues to sell. Apple will make a mint off of it, but it will not spark a major change in the way humans communicate.
Think of it this way: if every cell-phone owner in the world suddenly became an iPhone user, how much would it actually change things? Not much other than putting Motorola out of business.
