Save your old crayons! Here it is a craft that is not only educational but loads of fun. A crushed up crayon mosaic. My 12 year old and my 5 year old loved this. First we printed out some articles on the art of mosaic, before you start any craft I think that you should learn some background. They found this very interesting. Next we separated all the color families, reddish, yellowish, blueish... I'm sure you get it. We then put each family in a zip lock bag, got a hammer out and pounded away! Boy, was that fun. At this point we discussed what we were going to make, we went through tons of ideas and in the end settled on an ode to Starry night. We created our mosaic in stages, drawing our picture with glue and sprinkling the crayon pieces as we went. It was a terrific project that just could not go wrong. This started a mosaic marathon in our house, the girls started ripping up pieces of paper, collecting pebbles... you name it, they mosaic-ed with it. The creativity and ingenuity that cam out of this was incredible. So, save those old crayons and re-use!
