I've always believed in the banality of evil-that the biggest problems with discrimination aren't the violent outbursts, lynchings, and outward racism and sexism, but rather the more subtle aspects, the jobs that go to a white male instead of an equally qualified black female, the hampered political debates and sense of superiority that people take on when their discrimination is socially acceptable.

I believe that in modern society, victims of sexism suffer more for this reason: society, and American society especially, practically endorses banally sexist views, whether it's that a women is hormonally unfit to be President or that women in business are less cutthroat than men. Either of these things, when said about a race as opposed to a gender, would never be socially acceptable to say (after the 70's, at least), and because of that social acceptance, people really start to believe this stuff about women.

Women suffer more, and the crazy thing is that they realize that they suffer less. In order for our society to move beyond sexist discrimination, we must look at our actions with an incredibly skeptical eye and see how sex affects our viewpoints, then reject any viewpoint that is tied to discrimination. Until then, our discrimination will remain with us, just under the surface and outside of any hope of social dialog.
