Coffee is one of the oldest drinks in the world; legend has it that a goat herder saw his animals jumping around energetically after eating a strange berry, so he chewed that berry himself and was astounded by the energy he received. That berry, of course, was a coffee bean.
Over the years coffee has become a mainstay of many cultures, especially in America, where Starbucks coffee shops are popping up at a practically exponential rate. The always health conscious (but rarely risk-reactive) Americans, of course, want to know more about the effects of coffee.
The good news is that coffee has definite health benefits. It contains antioxidants, which have been shown to provide resistance against cancer, and may aid in preventing diseases such as Alzheimer's and diabetes.
The bad news is that coffee is, indeed, a strong stimulant, and may cause strain on the heart, lack of sleep resulting in overall lowered energy levels, addiction, and, of course, teeth staining and bad breath.
So, what's a modern person to do? As with anything, moderation is key. Holding oneself to two cups of coffee a day is a great way to receive the health benefits of coffee while minimizing the negative effects. No, coffee's not cocaine, and its addiction isn't as strong as cigarettes or other drugs. Moderation is possible.
Just think: eating a little bit of butter on a meal is good for you. Eating a stick of butter? Not so good.
Moderation, folks.
