Poetry: Blood

by Jeremy Robertsen

Created on: August 22, 2007

it makes up eight percent of my body weight
it serves as a vehicle for all that is me
it feeds me with nutrients
and helps my body to breathe

aside from the burden
of carrying oxygen gas
it works a part time job
taking out carbon dioxide trash

so much is tied
to this wonderful stuff
it's even vaguely associated
with the emotion of love

if you do not believe
that this concept is true
then how on earth
could my heart bleed for you?

it drives men to rage
when at first it appears
and an infection within it
could shorten your years

nations will irrigate
their borders with it
and vampires are rumored
to savor of it

spiders survive on this
liquid of life
and coincidentally
so does my ex-wife

it's a natural bandage
if you tear open your skin
but that same characteristic
can cause problems within

you'll get a transfusion
if your prognosis is grim
in fact the hardest part
is to keep it all in
