As a huge fan of the series, I would have to say that within the acting, script, special effects, directorial, and over-all quality would go for THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. It is the best out of all the installments in the Star Wars saga simply because it has provoked depth in the premise of the story line, the conflicts were unresolved and accumulated, and the whole concept of the all living force and its dark side gave a deeper dimensions as they were both seen on each contradicting sides much like the philosophy of the Yin and Yang as each element has its characteristics of its own opposites within them, when Luke Skywalker's fear and impatience almost drawn him to the dark side of the force for the first time after facing the Sith Lord. And at the same time, Darth Vader's symphaties and qualities of mercy slowly haunts him as he finally faces one of his long lost child.
As Far as the directorial and acting qualities of the film, "The Empire strikes back" delivers its most dramatic results as George Lucas recruited his former professor to direct the film giving it more of a disciplined, dramatic format as it matches with the film's darker theme. The acting performances also took a well proportioned direction as the result of Irwin Kershner's guidance. The special effects came smoother for its time after the trial and error period from the first film sharpened the skills for the crews in Industrial light and Magic/Skywalker sound/THX for the amazing scenes such as the pursuit for the Millennium Falcon in the asteroid field, The initial battle of the Ice planet Hoth, and the climactic Lightsaber duel towards the end of the movie. The special effects peaked for the limited technology at the time when home computers were in its infancy. To state a conclusion, "The Empire strikes back" marked the Star Wars saga's revelations which shaped the depth of its epic beauty and will always be decided in my opinion as the best installment in the six Star Wars episodes.
