On Manifestation and The Secret
I've been working with manifestation since long before 'The Secret' ever hit mainstream consciousness, and I'd like to share a few things that might shed some light on the matter. The things I've learned came from Shamanism, the Cabala, Hypnosis, Psychology, Wicca, several Eastern traditions, and even the Bible.
A lot of the people promoting systems like the Secret make it sound like if you just think happy thoughts and ignore the bad stuff, it will go away. Or like it's some kind of magic bullet that will make you instantly rich. Obviously this is not USUALLY true.
Systems like 'The Secret' are like crutches that help people achieve certain goals. Once the individual is strong or confident enough, they no longer need those tools. In the beginning however, the tools help to focus one's energy in an appropriate way to achieve the desired results. The problem is that people tend to confuse the method with the end result.
The end result is NOT that you will grow rich, or healthier, or more popular, or attract a mate. The end result is that you will be happier, more self-confident, and much more alert for opportunities leading to the desired results listed above (or whatever you're trying to achieve).
Psychology tells us that what we put into our minds will greatly affect the way we perceive the world. A child who grows up being told that life sucks and they suck and everything sucks is much more likely to be a depressive adult than a child who is told that life is wonderful and they are wonderful and everything is wonderful. The latter child will tend to have a much more positive attitude towards things than the former, obviously. The things we learn in childhood tend to stick with us and determine our reactions, both conscious and subconscious.
Now unfortunately, most of our parents were either not aware of this, or if they were, tended to use that knowledge in ways that re-enforced their own belief systems. When questioned about the basis for those belief systems, one is told to immerse oneself deeper into the paradigm to re-enforce one's faith. This is usually propagated through whatever religion one was born into. Most modern religions use, and teach its members to use, a ton of what I now know to be psychological and hypnotic techniques to create a heightened state of receptivity, suggestibility and acquiescence. This is accomplished primarily through guilt and fear.
Systems like 'The Secret' also use tools for mental manipulation,
