It is far removed from Paris or Rome, but the small community of Eureka Springs, Arkansas is considered by many to be one of the most romantic spots in America.
Nestled in the Ozarks not far from Branson, Missouri, Eureka Springs is charming community noted for its Victorian architecture, eclectic lifestyle and magnificent scenery. Historic hotels, charming restaurants, unique shops and top notch bed and breakfast inns abound, as do cabins, chalets and a variety of more standard accommodations.
Eureka Springs is also, according to one way of measuring such things, the wedding capital of America. More people get married here (per capita) than anywhere else in the United States. Wedding chapels ranging from the romantic to the quirky are scattered through the town, which even has its share of on-call ministers who will marry you just about any place in town that strikes your fancy.
The highlight of the town, for many, is the magnificent Crescent Hotel. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this stunning architectural masterpiece crowns a mountaintop overlooking the town below. Nestled in a park-like setting that includes flower gardens, a gazebo and walking trails, the Crescent is one of the most romantic hotels in the South. Furnished throughout with antiques, the hotel features gracious accommodations that are step back in time. Carriage rides depart from the front of the hotel and there are even nightly ghost tours that give guests a chance to experience what some say are the spirits of the Crescent's "long-term guests."
Other romantic spots include the nearby Beaver Bridge, a historic suspension span that is called by many the "Golden Gate of Arkansas." There is a historic railroad with a chance to experience dining on the rails. The community is also known for its art scene, with numerous galleries dotting the downtown area. On some nights there are even movies under the stars, projected on the wall of one of the historic downtown buildings.
Most people arrive in Eureka Springs by car, but air transportation is available to Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport which is about one hour away.
