When starting our advanced education should we start off in a Community College, or a University? There are of course pros and cons to both sides of this question. For the most part, this is an individual choice, but I have experienced both so perhaps I can shed some light on the subject. I first attended a Community College, due in large part, to the cost associated with going to a University. I do not have parents that are well off and there was no college fund for me. I had to pay for everything I was going to do. Well, without the benefit of a college education it was not likely that I would get a job which would allow me to attend a University. The tuition alone was way out of my price range. I realize that there are people that work their way through the Universities and pay for it by working and using student loans, but I had a better idea.
My plan was simple, I would attend Community College and get the credits I needed to achieve an Associates degree. I managed to accomplish this without incurring any dept through student loans. I was able to afford it and live in a comfortable manner. With the Associates degree I was then able to land a fairly decent job. I am not saying that it was great, but the pay was adequate to pay for the University I wanted to attend to finish my education and receive my Bachelors of Science Degree.
You might think that it would be difficult to adjust to the large University after attending a Community College, but it was not at all. It is not like high school and you are the new transfer. Bottom line is, if you want to save money go to Community College first and then finish off your education at a University.
