How to tell if your car's water pump is going to break soon.
The sign of a problem with the pump is a rise in water temperature, slow at first, but gradually rising. Another sign a change of sound from the engine. Sometimes, usually after reaching a high mileage, the water vanes in the pump can wear away. It happens so gradually that it may not be noticed until the problem is there. Another problem is that the gland seal, on the end of the shaft where it is secured into the pump housing, can swell and allow water to pass. This also happens gradually, and needs to be checked if you think you are using more water than usual, or the temperature is also higher than usual.
The only option is to get the water pump replaced. On some older cars it is possible to get a repair kit to recondition the pump, but the simplest way is a new pump from your car dealer / parts supplier.
