Reflections: Remembering the 2006 World Series

I hated the 06' season! It left me with a sick feeling in my gut. As I watched the St. Louis Cardinals parade around with the World Series Trophy. You see I am a Cubs fan. I have been since I was two, and the way the season started was not to bad. That is until Derrick Lee went down for the better part of the year to a wrist injury.

The Cubs were five games over .500 at the time, and were looking good. After Lee went down with his injury the team fell apart. The only comfort I had all season was when the Cubs played the Cardinals. It seemed they could not beat any one, but there hated division rivals. At the end of the regular season the Cubs had taken the season series from St. Louis. That was the only good news. Lee came back towards the end of the year, but was not his usual self. He finished the year out of the line up, and his team out of the playoffs.

Derrick Lee was not the only player we Cub fans lost in 06'. We sat back, and saw Greg Maddux walk out the door for the second time in his career. Maddux was traded at the deadline for Caesar Izturis, a gold glove short stop from Los Angles. We ended up getting Phil Nevin for a while, but that didn't last. Getting Nevin was one of those deals that most baseball fans would say, "That would have been nice five years ago."

As the clock slowly ticked away on another horrendous season for Cubs fans. More problems loomed over us. Aramis Ramirez was a free agent, and would Derrick Lee be alright for the 07' campaign. Then there were the usual questions that have been plaguing the alumni of Die Hard University. Would Kerry Wood, and Mark Prior be healthy next year, and who were we going to get in the off season?
