Meaning and uses for lockets

I received my first locket from my mother on my thirteenth birthday. I still have it 30 years later and its one of my favorite pieces of jewelry. It is a beautiful gold heart that hangs from a dainty chain. The face of the locket is engraved with a Victorian floral design and on the back my mom was sentimental enough to have my name and the date engraved.

Upon receiving the cherished gift, I had taken it to my room and flipped through my teen magazines until I found a picture of my favorite movie star. Carefully I had cut his picture out and set the tiny image into one side of the locket. On the other side, I inserted a picture of myself. Now the object of my affection and I were together, albeit only symbolically speaking, in my fickle teenage heart.

Today, the well worn locket hangs in my jewelry box and the pictures inside are that of my parents who have long since passed on but who will forever remain within my heart.

Over the years, I have received many gifts of jewelry but the locket has always remained a fashionable accessory for everything from turtlenecks and jeans to evening wear and will always have the place of honor amongst my other pieces. I receive many compliments on the locket and it remains a conversation piece that inspires people to look closer and listen with interest to the story behind it.

It is a timeless piece that my daughter will someday wear although I will provide her with one of her own on her thirteenth birthday. Lockets are appropriate for all age groups, although the sentimental value seems to increase with age.

Whether you purchase the locket for yourself or receive one as a gift, lockets are a must have accessory. They are not only functional but they are also meaningfully unique to each person.
