Orientation can be informative and fun. How to conduct an orientation without having new employees nodding off.
First and foremost, each new employee should have been given a handbook or overview of job description, company policies, and a description of the company itself. They must have these with them when attending orientation.
Having hopefully read these, the new employees should be able to have an understanding about their position, duties, and their contribution to the company. You must convey that their jobs are important and they are an asset to the company.
You must also schedule an overview of the hand book given when hired as well. You will be able to go over each guideline written.
Choosing a visual and hands on method during orientation will keep new employees awake and alert. The visual can be a tour through the company and describing each department. Another is showing a video or using a projector. Having employees physically engage themselves in an example of what their job is, will help get them ready for what to expect on their first day and thereafter. If computer usage comes with the job, have some computers available and show them examples of what they will be trained to do. Let them actively follow your verbal instructions during this segment of orientation.
Have a layout of all instructions and requirements in their positions. Have an overview of the days events in writing. Allow them to take notes and write down reminders as well. They will need to take these home and review them before their first day on the job. This helps those who have a tendency to forget a few things.
Encourage them to ask questions throughout each segment. You will want to know they are paying attention. They will appreciate knowing they are being well informed. Schedule breaks according to the time frame of their orientation. It is important to make sure they feel comfortable. Take a break and offer snacks or lunch. Having beverages available during orientation is encouraged. New employees will feel relaxed and continue to be on board with what you are instructing.
As they head off, let them know you are available for questions and will inform them of any changes prior to their first day. At the end of orientation, each new employee should feel well informed. They will be armed with the resources and knowledge to start their first day.
