Wooden furniture is a treasure if you know how to evaluate the pieces that you intend to purchase. There are some key points to consider.
You must be able to identify real wood from product made of MDF (medium density fiberboard). MDF is an inferior product to real wood. Much low priced furniture is built from MDF because of the low material cost.
If the item you consider is stained, look for the wood grain. Even if it is painted, if you observe closely, you can see the grain.
Is the item solid planed pieces or laminated? Some furniture has a laminated veneer on the surface and the underlay is a cheaper and possibly inferior material.
Don't accept any piece with obvious repairs such as gouges or deep scratches that have been repaired with wood filler. Some furniture that is represented as first quality may have repairs. These repairs will not improve with age, so beware.
Check the piece for sturdiness. Try to shake or push against it and see if the joints are solid or you can feel sway or movement. The legs should be solid and well braced on tables and chairs. The tops of cabinets and tables should be securely anchored to the frames.
If the piece is stained, check to see that the grain is attractive and that the wood does not have water stains, insect damage, etc. in some less obvious area.
The finish should be smooth and appealing. If dust was trapped in the finish during processing or drying, the surface will be rough and not attractive. Ask about the finishing process and if multiple coats were applied. This will add to durability of the finish and give it more depth and sheen.
If the piece has drawers, be sure that they move freely and do not bind. They should be sturdy and able to withstand daily wear.
Finally, if the piece has hardware such as hinges and handles, check to see if they are solid brass, stainless steel, or some lightweight, inferior product. Solid brass and other metals can be polished back to a high luster after years of use and will hold up to constant use.
Don't be fooled by an inferior product. Ask the proper questions and know what the answers should be and you'll be able to purchase wooden furniture that will become heirlooms for your family.
