Learning to draw

As an artist and teacher I hear it all the time - "I can't draw". I have found the best way to get through this block is through a series of timed drawings. It sounds simple - and it is - yet very effective. It is effective because the time pressure distracts people from trying to achieve perfection - the standard to which they measure themselves. Simply pick something simple to draw - an object placed in front of you preferably, grab a stopwatch and give yourself a ridiculous 30 seconds to draw the object. Repeat this a few times. You will get the picture that in 30 seconds a masterpiece will not be created. Repeat at longer intervals, up to 20 minutes. This exercise will also hone your observational skills. The race against time distracts from the frustration of not having developed your skill, and so furthers your skill in the meantime. Enjoy!
