and have more control over the decisions we would make, while it gave us knowledge that we could reflect back to when we were adults.
There is never any encouragement of "go out and have sex" in sex education classes in school. These are classes that furnish our teens with a knowledge bank that helps them answer and approach hard situations they most definitely will come into contact with. It arms them with the factual understanding which will hopefully help them make better decisions for themselves. However, sex education in school can only be enhanced if the teen can go home to a household where the dialogue on sexuality and education is further discussed. If your approach as a parent is to never touch the subject, or it is as simple as saying "No, sex is a sin you have to wait till you are married", or you are not willing to furnish your teen with the factual information about sex, well, you maybe asking for more trouble.
Again, in a perfect home, a teen would be able to go to their parents and ask the tough questions about their hormones and their sexuality and their curiosities and their relationships, and actually have their parents understand them. All too often, there are parents that fear the subject or are not all that knowledgeable, and they will keep the topic taboo in their homes. Where do we expect teens to learn the facts? If you as their parent cannot help them and you do not want the school to educate them responsibly, they will turn to their peers, and their peers. Do you really want your teen's friends to coach them about sex education? If you cannot, then let the schools do it; and if you are, then thank the schools for being another helpful tool in your parenting tool-box.
