Poetry: Heroes

It takes more to be a hero
Than pure bravery
One has to be strong in mind
As well as in body
There's more to a hero
Than just fighting the unjust
Logic and heart And good conscience are a must
Who are my heroes?
What makes me view them so?
Is it the young teen-aged mother
Refusing to quit school?
Wanting her education
For her child's future.
Is it the spouse of the cancer victim?
Or maybe the victim them self.
Facing death's stare
With every ounce of themselves.
It could be the soldier
Fighting for my rights
Writing letters home to their loved ones
As they wipe the tears from their eyes.
I see the child on the bike
That once belonged to their brothers
Never known a new pair of pants
To have as their own.
A Hero is anyone
Who shows compassion and honor.
They are your friend and your doctor
Parents or brothers.
The inner character of ones' true nature
Defines who they are to so many others.
My heroes are all of these people
And so many more
They are the ones who will be there when I need them
Even if they can offer nothing at all
